Candidates must be registered with the Professional Board for Psychology of the Health Professions Council of South Africa as psychologists and have been either:

Registered continuously for at least two years, or

Have a minimum of five years major-time supervised working experience in neuropsychological assessment and treatment.

Candidates must be able to detail their experience in neuropsychological cases and demonstrate their knowledge of neuropsychology by either:

Passing a SACNA knowledge examination, or

Completing a Masters or Doctoral dissertation or thesis in the field, which must demonstrate a grasp of the core body of neuropsychological knowledge, and refers to a substantial assessment or treatment programme.

The applicant has submitted three comprehensive neuropsychological reports of a standard acceptable to the SACNA Executive and its external examiner. Reports should be completed and submitted within a maximum of 12 months after successfully completing the knowledge examination (2a) or having a dissertation accepted (2b). These reports may not have been completed as part of the supervision requirements described in (4) below.

The Executive Committee will make supervision arrangements for candidates who have passed the knowledge examination (2a) or had their dissertation accepted (2b). Supervisors will be appointed for a minimum of two candidates at a time from among SACNA’s full members. Supervisors are paid at the rates recommended by PsySSA, half of which must be paid by the candidate, and the remainder by SACNA. Supervision will be provided for a maximum of 1½ hours per week for a period of 12 weeks.

Once assessments have been submitted (3) and any supervision requirements (4) have been fulfilled, candidates will be required to present themselves for an oral examination. This requirement may be waived at the discretion of the examiners.
